Is WoWProgress Population Data a Fiction?

Recently Blizzard CM Drazta mentioned (in Spanish) that WoWProgress Population data is "incredibly inaccurate".
I would like to comment and provide more info about how we calculate WoW population.

Players asked question about population of RP realm Los Errantes (according to our data this realm has only about 1000 PvE players).
Drazta's answer was: "This is a lie, Los Errantes has more population than any PvP realm".

This is our definition of Population:
Population - amount of unique players that meet any of the two conditions:
- has a level 90 character that killed something in Tier 16 Normal
- has a level 90 character in a guild that killed something in Tier 16 Normal

So basically we count all high level members of guilds that killed at least one boss in Tier 16 content.

It's reasonable that there are about 1000 players on the realm that has only 22 guilds in Tier 16 rankings, averaging 45 unique players per guild.

Now you can say that there are much more players, because not everyone likes raiding and many raiders only do LFR and Flex difficulty.

Yes, this is true, especially for RP realms such as Los Errantes. On RP realms there are more players that interested in Role Playing rather than organized raiding.

Now imagine you are a player that interested in PvE Progression and you're given data about full WoW population (we don't have such data, but imagine Blizzard gave it to you).

There you see that Los Errantes is high populated realm, you transfer there looking for PvE guild. And you find that there is only 1 guild that killed Garrosh Normal!

Now that would be incredible misleading!

WoWProgress is a website that's focused on PvE Progression and we provide you data that is relevant for PvE players.

Your guild is listed, but it hasn't been updated for long time.
You can easily find it using the big search form on the main page. Then you should click "update guild progress" button on the right side of the page.

I fully agree with the ending statement. To add in players who *at least* raid Flex would just pollute the overall percentages and give misleading information that may have otherwise helped others in the long run. Glad we're not looking to casualize WoWProgress, too.

The API often returns internal errors lately
    http://us.battle.net/api/wow/guild/hydraxis/Kaizen returns {"status":"nok", "reason": "Internal server error."}
    That could be the reason.

I find this amusing. Your comment is from a month ago, but the same thing is going on today. Our guild progress cannot update, because Wowprogress appears to update completely randomly. Only two out of the ten people on our last kill from three days ago are showing the kill, and I've updated it in every way possible countless times over the last three days. A google search turns up countless "fail to update" type problems over the last three years. And no, the problems have nothing whatsoever to do with battle.net, which is fully updated. For that matter, --- updated properly within minutes. It's just Wowprogress that is constantly broken.

What Draztal says is true, but not at all. Los Errantes has more population than just 1000 pve players, as this web states. What really happens is that people in a role play does more things than just pve.
Just use wowprogress for its true purpose, looking for pve progression on realms.

What are your plans for handling server merges and guilds with cross-server members? Will they be tracked together or separately?

well as long as API won't show any connections, none of the sites can do it.
Someone can do it manually , but that will require equal time spend with the blizzards API team plus any human errors.

I would like to read an official statement though :)

Any chance we could opt to use wowhead data instead of wowdb? I'm not confortable clicking the items and not having tooltips for them. :|

This site is going down hill fast.

Look at Proudmoore: 0-25 mans have killed Heroic Garrosh on Proudmoore. The heroic Garrosh Achievement is still up for grabs. A guild paid a cross server top 40 guild to carry them through Seige. Pull up the kill and you find out that half the group was from a different server. This needs to be corrected, they haven't even killed H Parragons in the Wake guild if you only count their guild, or even the server. Things like this are happening frequently, destroying this sites credibility more than this mention from Blizzard CM Drazta.

Can confirm Blizzard is correct about accuracy of the content on sites like this: It's showing my toon joining my guild on Oct 17, 2011. It was Oct 17, 2010 (during WotLK) when the guild was created, and as the GM, I joined this guild.

Also other toons that joined listed on my guild didn't all join in 2011, either.

Went back to the screenshot timestamps: I AM A HOLY PALADIN was created on 11/6/2010, actually. This is confirmed with a GM chat about not only a bug with my other guild's bank (another reason I created the guild, as my sis and I both were locked out of the bank), but getting my toon's name back from server transfers.

11/12/2010 Kevyne had his name back and in the guild as such ever since.

So guild was definitely created in 2010. With a GM log to prove it (and since we know WoW has a hidden watermark ingame of JPEG

And that's where Blizzard is correct: If folks have to signup to correct the wrong data displayed itself because it's not important to you, "Houston, we have a problem..."

Creation dates are important to Guild Leaders as it shows longevity, compared to the 10000001 raid guilds that break up over loot in the first place. -_-

I'm interested to know why level 90s that haven't killed anything in t16, but are guilded in guilds that have, count in realm pop?

Wouldn't a more accurate measure of the population, for PvE purposes, be strictly the number of character that have killed a boss in t16?

Id like to know, how characters once showing, and which you know ppl still have on their account is no longer showing on wowprogress when looking up another char of that person. I would suggest some way to actually check if these characters are still on account before they are deleted from the search on wowprogress. I was wanting to talk to someone at another server than his main and could no longer find the character on the list. Even I know its being played. I wish I had written all alts down but thought they would always be seen here.

When is the site going to be updated for the new raid tiers?

    Flex is now Normal
    Normal is now Heroic
    Heroic is now Mythic?

Are all 3 going to be used, or just Heroic and Mythic?

Also, i find the data that the site pulls is not all that accurate, even with an update. My guid ran 13/14 SoO yesterday and it still only has our data from the week before.

Since the new patch there is no api for raid progression.
If you check your char in the armory there is no progress anymore.

Probably they will enable the new raids when WoD comes out.

That guy must be dumb to state that anyway, no offence... I never checked out a low pop realm and counted anyone to know that it only counted 90 people in the first place.. Since alts of myself or from my fellow friends in our guild are never shown + would also gank our avg ILVL and its ranking.

And i agree on Scarletsix.. I obviosly need to refresh my guild page to show the new people, check them out and get rid of those jokers who called themselves raiders...
